Healthy Valentine's Day Suggestions
This year most people are trying to save money in as many ways as possible. With Valentine’s day coming up we thought it would be a good time to help you come up with some good ways to have a romantic, love filled day without having to spend an arm and a leg on gifts, flowers and dinner.
Instead of focusing this holiday on gift giving, focus it on spending time together and doing things together. For example, pick a healthy meal that the two of you can cook together. Make an outing to the store together to get all of the necessary ingredients for your meal and then spend some time in the kitchen together.
If you don’t like to cook then maybe consider other ways you can spend time with your Valentine. How about a scavenger hunt, watching your favorite movie, playing games (i.e. Scrabble, Pictionary…), or building a fire together.
Instead of buying each other gifts, try something a little more from the heart, like a sweet love letter. You could also make a CD or play list of your favorite songs to listen to while you’re cooking or sitting by the fire. How about printing up some new photos of the two of you and framing them for your Valentine? All of these sweet gestures will be appreciated by your special someone.
If you decide that cooking is how you want to spend your time together then make it a healthy meal. If it is cold out you can try out a new soup recipe, maybe one that is more broth based than cream based, or a new chili recipe that has a little spice to it to help speed up your metabolism. If you want something heartier than that try a lean cut of beef, fish, or chicken for your dinner. You can cook it with some warm spinach and wild rice as sides or maybe try some risotto with some peas and shrimp mixed in along with a side salad.
Try to stay away from having too many carbs or fried foods. They may be warm comfort foods but they are not the healthy smart choice. Your significant other wants you to be healthy and happy so reach for the greens instead of the bread basket. Spending time together will be a great way to enjoy your Valentine.
Wishing you all a very happy Valentine’s Day!
